Based on actual crime scenes photos, the cut and drown head is a grotesque example of real mutilation and forensic taphonomy. In this instance the victim was killed, then a portion of the face was cut away, and finally the body was dumped in a body of water. The skin shows the coloration and waxy sheen of a body submerged for a long time.
